Nashik Kumbh Mela

Why just 3 years for the next Kumbh Mela?

This type of Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 6 years. Therefore, it has been 6 years since the last Kumbh Mela in Nashik in 2015-16. This was called the Nashik Trimbak Simhastha Kumbha Mela 2015-16.

Origin of Kumbh Mela

The word ‘Kumbh’ means a pot. In this context, the pot refers to the pot of nectar (amrit) which came up from the Sagar Manthan. The celestial gods and demons wanted to possess the pot of nectar. But Lord Vishnu cunningly took the form of Mohini Avatar and snatched the pot of nectar from the demons. But during this process, some drops of the nectar fell in different places on Earth. These places were Nashik, Prayagraj, Haridwar, and Ujjain. Hence, the Kumbh Mela is a celebration of this mythological event of Samudra Manthan.
