Shree Kalaram Mandir

 Kalaram Temple

Nashik has many ancient temples with suburb architecture. One of them is a temple called Kalaram Temple or Shree Kalaram Mandir. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ram. A black idol of Lord Ram in the temple is thought to be about 2000 years old. This temple's name means ‘Black Ram’. There are other idols of Lakshmana, Sita, and Hanuman in the temple. There are 14 steps to climb in the main temple, which is said to represent the 14 years of exile of Ram, Lakshman, and Sita.

84 sculpted pillars in the temple are the representation of the 84 lakh times a soul has to take birth. You can visit the tank and shrine near the main Kalaram temple. It is very famous story that Shri Ram used to live here along with Lakshman and Sita.

A person named Rangarao Odhekar built the temple again in the 1700s. However, the original temple is believed to be dating back to the 7th century and 11th century. The temple suffered heavily due to repeated invasions and attacks by Mughal and Turkish rulers. But each time it was rebuilt with new construction.

One sight of this temple is enough to make you want to visit it. The shikhara or spire of Shree Kalaram Temple has gold plating. The sculpted pillars, elegant gates, carvings on the walls, and sculptures are enough to testify to the craftsmanship of this temple. Black basalt stone is used in its construction and that is also why it is called Kalaram Temple.
