Sundarnarayan Temple
Nashik has so many Hindu temples of ancient origin, and Sundarnarayan Temple is one of them. The main deity of the temple is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu called Sundarnarayan. The temple has ancient Indian architecture, which looks beautiful from a distance. There are carvings on the pillars, walls, and dome of the temple. Lord Sundarnarayan is the major Hindu god to whom this particular temple is dedicated. He is shown along with idols of Saraswati and Lakshmi.
The most amazing thing about this temple is that when the sun rises on March 21st, the first rays fall on the main idol of Sundarnarayan. According to historical records and architectural excavations, Sundarnarayan Temple dates back to the 13th century. Initially, the Yadavas started to build the temple. Successive rulers added more structures to the temple.
People of Maharashtra have tremendous faith and devotion to the temple. Religious festivals like Kartik Purnima and Ram Navami are celebrated in the temple. The temple is a mix of Hemadpanthi and Maratha architectural styles. The spectacular styles can be seen in the carved pillars, sculpted dome, walls and gates.
There is a mythological story about how Lord Vishnu defeated the dreaded demon called Jalandhar. He took the form of the demon and then stayed with Jalandhar’s wife, Vrinda. This made Jalandhar weak and powerless. Vishnu defeated the demon and this enraged Vrinda, who cursed him to turn into black stone. Vishnu took the form of Sundarnarayan and hen bathed in the water tank on Godavari.
